What are "crack pairings" in fanfiction?

It's basically a pairing that really makes no sense whatsoever. For example, if you paired say...Naruto with Misty from Pokemon. Crack pairing. I've always taken the "crack" part to mean that it refers to the fact that it's kind of a nonsensible pairing, jokingly indicating that it could only have been conceived while on drugs.
